A few weeks ago, Tay told you all about the possibility of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni’s re-translation. Now, I’m proud to announce that, two days ago, MangaGamer officially announced that the translation project is underway.

Plot Summary (from VNDB):
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

A project that was started in the very beginning of 2012 has now reached it’s hour of arrival. Fuwanovel is proud to announce the completion of the translation for ALcot’s: Shinigami no Kiss wa Wakare no Aji! The translation team known as Kohaku Translations is responsible for this amazing contribution to the visual novel world.

Story

The story takes place in the small, Japanese town of Nissei. This peaceful seaside community’s supposedly unscathed history is interrupted when tragedy struck a duo of young children, whose childish antics are overcome by a particular romantic fancy for each other. When the story’s protagonist–the male of the duo–, Amamiya Makoto, finds himself knocking at death’s door, his friend gives her life to save his. The trauma Makoto was forced to face was enough to drive the common man to suicidal depression, yet somehow, he managed to cope with his grief, and lived on in the very same town where his greatest struggle still lingered in the shadows of his heart.

The inexorable hold of time speeds days, weeks, months, then years past Makoto’s hazy eyes. As life moves its course, Makoto slowly, but rather painstakingly, begins to force himself to forget, and attempts a peaceful life with his younger sister, Amamiya Shizuku.

But one can never truly forget.

Makoto’s supposedly “peaceful” life is shattered when he meets Kohaku: a loli shinigami who’s self-professed purpose for being in his presence is the overseeing of his death. “Is there something you want to leave behind for your loved one?”

Now it’s death who’s knocking on his door.

The protagonist’s younger stepsister. When she was little, her father remarried and she had a hard time accepting Makoto as her older brother. She still doesn’t talk to him much, but when she has spare time she’ll go to his room and read magazines on his bed. She sleeps a lot, and always has to be woken up in the morning by her brother. She even says herself that she can’t do anything without him.

The daughter of the owner of the video rental store “Kokonoka” that Makoto works part-time at. She’s a reliable person that’s kind to everyone, and is the class president. Her father is always nagging her to get married, and he recognizes her and Makoto as a couple even though they aren’t in a relationship. One of what I consider to be the dark horses in the April release batch, I nabbed this one with no expectations and instead the story nabbed me. I was hooked, line, and sinker.

What I found intriguing is the main protagonist, Makoto, which is rare for me. He used to have an osananajimi but because of a tragic accident, she sacrificed her life to save his. Makoto continues to live on, but his heart sits at death’s doorstep. I can’t really put a handle on him. He’s kind to others but disinterested in pursuing romantic relationships. He’s not emo or suicidal, but he is also not afraid to die. Makoto is calm, perhaps too calm. If he ever has the ambition, he’ll be an incredible poker player. The one thing that I can say for certain is the girl he loves, only lives in his past.

The game have tragic elements and it doesn’t hold back the punches. A minor character named Satonaka Rin confesses to Makoto and while thankful for her feelings, he turns her down. Her brother heard about this later and asks him to try to reconsider but Makoto is resolute in his decision. When I first saw this I thought, “Hey, a male subcharacter without his own paper doll have a voice? That’s pretty neat.” Even though I could not see his face, I sympathized with his want for his sister’s happiness.

What I didn’t realize was that soon after, a stalker stabs him and dies from protecting Rin. Nicely played Citrus. You are able to have me connect with a faceless, minor character and pity Rin’s tragedy, and it is only the beginning of the game. Not only that, but a strange girl says Makoto will die too. That’s a nice way to lighten up the mood.

Produced by Alcot Citrus in 2009, Shinigami no Kiss wa Wakare no Aji was the only game released before the child company of Alcot closed down. In a nutshell, it’s a story about a guy, the people he love, and a shinigami. Characters: The guy, the protagonist, the main character, is one named Makoto. His osananajimi died when they were young to save him, and now he has pretty much no will to live. He can be pretty funny at times though. The non-blood-related sister is Shizuku. She’s a bit of a tsundere, and is great at insulting her brother. That, and throwing out sexual innuendos like no tomorrow. The classmate/workmate is Honoka. Yes, she is every bit as sweet and reliable as her sterotype suggests. Her dad runs a video store, and is pretty funny. The problem is, she has a friend named Rin, who confesses to Makoto first. The loli shinigami is Kohaku. She’s pretty much emotionless, until character development kicks in. She doesn’t know much about the world either, which can be pretty funny. Her route is only unlocked afte rthe two other routes are cleared.

Story:

I thought that it was ok. Maybe it’s because I’ve been spoiled by Merry, or maybe because I went through the story pretty quickly at 1 in the morning, but I felt pretty much no emotional attachment to the character. At times, such as when Kohaku moved in, the story kind of felt nonsensical. The drama was ok sometimes, and the slice of life was entertaining enough. I think that a good point about the story is the fact that it is short. The story was more tight-knit and easier to go through.

The endings aren’t perfect, but they’re the subtle kind that gets better when you remember and think about them more. It might just be me rushing again, but I actually had to go and read a few analysis pieces before I got some of the plot points. The true ending is quite vague and open to many interpretations, like Cross Channel or inception.

Art:

I was pretty worried about the art, since the art of Real Imouto was pretty bad. But, from the looks of things, this is one artist that got worse as time went by, so the art isn’t that bad. Of course, it helps that the CG budget for this is a lot higher than that of Real Imouto.
Kohaku looks so inconsistent throughout the game that I can’t help but think that there were two different artists who worked on her.

Sound:
There aren’t many pieces of BGM, and I think only one vocal song, which is the opening. It’s overall of a pretty nice quality, and the number of pieces is enough for a game this short. The voice acting wasn’t bad.

System:
Simple but effective, with little subtitles (such as the fading glow on flowers) that makes all the difference.
Story:8×5=40/50
Art: 7×3=21/30
Sound: 8/10
Programming: 9/10
Total: 78/100 B-

We did this to ourselves, people.  It is now my pleasure to introduce you to “Fall In Love With Creatures! Zakamutt’s True Remembrance Review

True Remembrance

Earlier today, Zakamutt wrote a stunningly good review on True Remembrance, a memorable visual novel developed by Shiba Satomi. Here’s a short summarf of his thoughts on this game:

The prose is pretty good: you can feel that the translator and/or editor did a quality job…major props to the guys that worked on that.

The music fits well; it reminds me of the Kanon soundtrack in a good way — it gives off that winter vibe. However, I feel there could have been a few more tracks and/or track variations thrown in — one piece in particular was repeated a bit too much.

The sprite art in True Remembrance is beautiful. It’s not exactly conventional beauty, though…There’s something about the artstyle — the sprites kind of feel like they were done in watercolor. A kind of washed-out, transparent, cold feel. It really fits the game’s winter atmosphere.

All in all, True Remembrance has my strongest recommendations in a long while. Pretty much everything about it is good, and it’s not a super-long read either…I cried a little, and, well, it’s just beautiful in general.

[I give it a] 9/10. I hope Sekai Project (kind of a spiritual successor to Insani) eventually brings over more doujin VNs after they finish with Narcissu; all the ones Insani translated have been interesting.

True Remembrance

Chaos;Child, the Next Science-Adventure Title, Announced!

During the Live5pb 2013 event, 5pb officially announced the the fourth game in the Science-Adventure series: Chaos;Child. About 13 hours ago, MAGES musical producer Chiyomaru Shikura tweeted about this release with some serious enthusiasm.

This new visual novel is stated to be more of a direct sequel to Chaos;HEAd, and will attempt to offer some closure for some of the main conflicts presented in Chaos;HEAd, chief among them being the lingering presence of the Noah system.  According to the Anime News Network: “A major key in the game’s story are ‘Power Seals’, mysterious seals that are placed all around Shibuya.”

While it was in fact stated that the release of this game would be in 2014, the platform was not clarified.  Currently, is has not been stated whether it will be for the PC–like Chaod:HEAd  and Steins;Gate were–, or Xbox and Play Station–like Robotics;Note.

In the words of MetalUpa, “Hopefully we’ll see a PC release this time, so a fan translation can be created.”

Azengar’s Majikoi Project Needs an Editor and Second Translator!

Hey everybody, Tay here.  For those keeping track at home, there are two translation groups working on translating Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai! (Majikoi): Yandere, and a group  led by Azengar.  We haven’t heard from Yandere in a long time, but Azengar’s group is still going.

I’m writing to let you know that they need some help!  The current team consists of three members (hacker/programmer, translator, and TLC).  They need an editor and a second translator.

Yes of course, so about us, for now we consist of three people. I’m doing the programming stuff, hacking and patching the game. There’s Kosuna who’s translating the game and he has one skilled guy with him for proofreading / QC purposes. That’s why we’re going to need an editor (doing this by myself will take forever since I’m bad at this) and another translator for increasing our quality and speed… We don’t intend to step in the work of Yandere translation or whatever but there’s no update since 8 months so we’re completing it.

So!  If you’re interested in working as an editor or a translator on the Majokoi project, please get in touch with Azengar on the Fuwanovel forums (send a PM to user Azengar), or at ripazengar@gmail.com.

Interested Translators:  The second translator role will be to assist the primary translator will tricky sentences.  There “shouldn’t be too much work”, so it sounds like your role will primarily be to assist in smaller, harder fragments.

Hey everybody, Tay here.  In this edition of “Community Spotlight” I had the privilege to interview Clephas, a voracious VN reader who is well known for his frighteningly-long VNDB profile read-list, and among the Fuwanovel community for thoughtful topics discussing VN fandom and authorship (also, he runs a fascinating personal VN of the month thread.)    I hope this interview will interest you, too: I found it very interesting to peek into the brain of one who has read and seen so much of the VN world.  I still laugh when he refers to the “Prophet’s Disease” in response to a comparison with Keima (The World God Only Knows).

As usual, some minor formatting has been done to the interview (my lines are in bold, Clephas’s lines are in normal print) and a few of my commentaries/one question were edited or removed, but the interview is otherwise untouched.


Interview

Tay: Well, first of all, I’m interested in hearing how you first found VNs, and what it was that kept you interested in them.

Clephas:  Mmm… well, when I first got into VNs, it was through the editor Rika-chama at m33w, the fansub group I worked with the most consistently when I was still doing that.  He suggested I try Tsukihime, and within a few hours I was completely hooked.  I devoured my way through all the translated ones – including the nukige – within a matter of two months and dug into my first Japanese one – Jingai Makyou – shortly after.

What kept me interested was the medium’s unique combination of a written story, visual aspects, and audio to create an experience that differed radically from books/lightnovels and even manga.  I was always the type that preferred rpgs with more story and less combat, such as Xenosaga, and so it clicked quite well with my personal tastes.

This was 2008, I believe.

Is that mixture of elements (word, image, audio) what still draws you to the genre today?

Mmm… to an extent.  However, as I drew deeper into the world of VNs in general, one thing I noticed was that writers of VNs – other than moege – seemed to have a great deal more freedom to write than anime and manga writers for large companies seemed to have.  In particular, the concepts of morality/amorality that are tackled in games like Devils Devel Concept are ones that were unlikely to be  tackled in mainstream otaku media such as rpgs, anime, or manga.  This is because Japanese tend to prefer a slightly more optimistic or surreal approach to problems, with rare exceptions such as anime series like Fate/Zero standing out a great deal.

(I think there’s something to be said about VNs — and all written mediums, perhaps — having the potential to treat themes and concepts normally constrained in other mediums. Good point.)

Have you been able to keep track of all the VNs you’ve played?

Mmm… VNDB helps a great deal.  Remembering each one I’ve played by name is pretty much impossible.  If I see the title screen I can usually remember most of the story, in general.  With the ones I liked most, I remember more detail, and I usually can recall the emotions I felt at the time I first played them with relatively little difficulty.

I actually have a question submitted by a user in the Fuwanovel Forums:

Do you ever experience Keima (TWGOK) moments in VNs? You’ve played so many of them — is it even possible for you to be surprised in a VN’s plot now that you’ve seen every possible archetype?

Mmm… with your standard moege/nakige it is very rare for me to be surprised.  To a lesser extent, this is also true with story-focused VNs.  However, I have learned how to not let such experiences let me get bored (though it is admittedly harder with moege) and detach myself to a degree from my ‘prophet’s disease’.  If I hadn’t learned to appreciate games and stories for what they are (with the exception of series or games by a favorite company, which inevitably carry certain expectations) I wouldn’t still be a gamer and bibliophile after more than twenty years.

I do complain when writers/companies fail to properly utilize their cliches and settings though. A lot.

Do you have any personal “favorite” examples of “cliches” or “settings” being especially well-utilized?

Hmmm… for settings, Devils Devel Concept did a wonderful job in creating a unique mythos and utilizing it properly.  Each heroine path revealed more aspects of the world and the protagonist’s and heroine’s relation to it than the one before.  As for the proper use of cliches… Komorebi no Nostalgica – one of this year’s few kamige – comes to mind.  The heroines are a pretty standard set for a modern VN – an android, a little sister, an osananajimi, etc. – and it looked at first as if the story would be character-centric.  However, the cliches in the story were used as they should have been – as tools to enhance the plot.  The android was used to explore the growth of a self-aware AI through interactions with humans, and the other routes all had their own unique paths and endings that left me both intellectually and emotionally satisfied.  Throwing out a few cliches to draw interest from moe-fans and newbies is easy, but making something that feels fresh despite using those cliches is the work of a master.

You mentioned m33w earlier. Tell us more about  your history with fan subbing.

I started with Mayu-subs, when their translator for World Destruction (also known as Sands of Destruction) vanished on them.  At the time, I frequented the Baka-Wolf forums, and I took on the job without much thought.  I quickly came to realize just how hard the job could be, and I’d chosen a series that was a pain in the rear to translate in any case.  Nonetheless, I completed my translation of the series, before stealing the best members and forming our own group, Batsu-Geimu.  Our first project, Shikabane Hime: Aka, was a serious pain.  We got good reviews for our work on it, but no one in our group wanted anything to do with the series by the end.  It was about that time that I helped with the last two episodes of the second season of xxxHolic for the Baka-Wolf fansub group and was recruited by m33w to help with Telepathy Shoujo Ran, where I ended up being mentored by Xess, who is the best raw translator I’ve ever come across.  Unlike me, he was a meticulous researcher type, rather than a ‘I know it, now I transform it’ type.  As such, I found myself learning a great deal from him, and I was left in awe of just how much work he could get done in a short time.  I had a wide knowledge of fantasy terms in Japanese from my obsessions, so I was able to serve well as a tlc, simply correcting terms he got wrong or couldn’t figure out, and under his guidance I found myself improving rapidly in both understanding and translation skill.  It was about that time that Basaka entered Batsu-Geimu and we began the translation of Koukaku no Regios, which we never quite finished  (incidentally the last major project for the group as a whole).  At the time, I was with about six different fansub groups, tling or tlcing about four to five episodes a week.  This lasted for about a year, before I burned out and reduced my intake to one or two series a season, as a tlc only.  My last anime series was Dantalian no Shoka, a delightful little fantasy series that really, really needs a sequel.

Are you still involved with subbing?

I occasionally advise on difficult lines when asked, but I’ve refused all requests to take on new projects for the past two years I’m more or less forgotten… not an unusual fate for a burned out translator Not as much of a point to fansubbing with crunchysubs everywhere.

I know you’ve done some work in translating VNs.  Is there a significant psychological difference when translating a full-length VN as opposed to shorter anime episodes?

Yes.  The biggest difficulty is the sheer volume of work and the sense of isolation a translator inevitably feels when he begins his work.  Of course, with big groups like Amaterasu, I’m sure there is a huge difference, but with the abortive groups I’ve worked with, that is the biggest obstacle for a translator to remaining.  More than once, I’ve found myself a thousand lines into a VN, only to find the rest of the group gone. It is virtually impossible to get up the will to continue a project that was once dissolved. At least for me.

Do you ever see yourself getting burned out of Japanese culture, or Japanese cultural products (i.e., anime, Visual Novels, etc.)?

Mmm… I can see my enthusiasm cooling somewhat someday.  However, I love Japanese culture, even aside from otaku culture.  There are many unattractive aspects to their culture (such as the incredible peer pressure they experience), but I find it fascinating to examine just how even those aspects form the basis for the actions of individuals and groups within the culture.

Outside of these products, what other hobbies and passions do you have?

Anthropology and history are two of my major interests.  I like studying how cultures develop over time and how the past affects the formation of present mores and standards.  I also read voraciously.  I will read just about anything, though I have a distinct preference for fantasy, sci-fi, and the like that is also reflected in my tastes in VNs.  I have also made a hobby of creating settings, world-building, and occasionally even writing stories and novels (though I haven’t had the free time to challenge writing an entire novel in the past year).

Do you have a favorite VN? If so, why is it your all-time favorite?

Mmm… I have a lot of VNs that compete for that slot, but the one that has had the most lasting impression on me was Evolimit, by Propeller (a subsidiary of Will).  Evolimit combines all the best elements of a fantasy/action vn (cool action/powers, capable protagonists and side-characters, and a grand story) with quick humor and occasional emotional blackmail (seriously, if you don’t cry at least once during each path, you are heartless).  Not only that, but the game manages to be inspiring… something that is oddly rare in VNs in general.  Games might draw out emotion from me, but it is rare for me to come out of a game feeling uplifted, with even my cynicism gone dead for a few hours.  I don’t always recommend it, because it does have parts that might be hard on newbies, but it is the one VN I know for a fact will never be toppled from the top of my list (probably because I can still enjoy – and cry like a baby for it – it after playing it five times

Alright.  Well, those were the main points I wanted to ask about.  Anything else I should ask, or that you’d like to talk about?

Hmmm… Those on the forums know my opinion on the difficulties and pitfalls of being a translator, for the most part.  However, I would like to restate my warning about redundancy in VN translation projects.  Having only a single translator serves as a beginning, but most projects that don’t obtain more won’t last.  It is better to have a dozen translators working on a single project, with one or two translation-checkers fixing the less-skilled translators’ mistakes than to have just one or two translators trying to dig their way through a mountain of text with a teaspoon.

Ate the Moon Translations: Ikikoi Release

Hey everybody, Tay here.  The folks over at Ate the Moon Translations have decided to release their work on Ikinari Anata ni Koishiteiru (Ikikoi).  According to the release notes:

Do note that although it’s completely translated into English, the editing is incomplete, and the efforts invested in this game vary. It’s clearly not a proper “release”, but more of a “giving up” on finishing this. This is a decision made at the end of October after roughly 2 months of stagnation, when it has became clear that this project will not be going anywhere.

Due to the substandard quality, it’s advised that those who will feel infuriated by bad English should avoid this. For quality reference, I’d say the unedited portion is it’s at the same level as Sono Hanabira 3 and 5, if you’d read that, you’ll be fine. Even though we’re unable to finish this to the end, I still hope that some of you can be able to enjoy it, or at least enjoy parts of it.

Higanbana – The Second Night Patch Release Date, Postponed!

Just yesterday, Spider Lily Translations officially announced that they would be releasing the translation patch for Higanbana Second Night this Sunday. However, early this morning, Yirba retracted that statement and announced that it would be delayed. Here are some quotes from that official blog post:

Yesterday, I announced that we’d be releasing our English translation patch for Higanbana – The Second Night on Sunday. However, I (along with other members of Spider Lily Translations) have now decided to postpone the release.

I know this won’t satisfy everyone, but what I can say is that the patch will be much helped by the delay, and that your experience using it will be significantly improved.

So, when will the patch be released? …I don’t know. It’s not that I’m withholding that information — I genuinely don’t know. I’m sure you all want the patch to be released as soon as possible, and I feel the same way. Still, if I were pressed for an answer, I’d give a rough answer of “this Winter”. It’s difficult to estimate how long it will take until we’re finally ready to release the patch, but I’ll be sure to give you more concrete details as soon as I have them.

As it stands, a good many expecting visual novel fanatics who purchased this game to make it in time for this release will be nothing short of disappointed, angry, or sad. However, the improvements that will be made to the patch, and the richer game experience that will come as a result will surely outweigh this disappointing news. Key Visual Arts Releases the First Angel Beats Teaser Page

For those of you that have been eagerly awaiting more news on the highly anticipated Angel Beats visual novel, wait no longer! Just recently, Key Visual Arts officially released the first Angel Beats teaser page, which features a scrolling wall of nostalgic CGs of the afterlife world that you’ve come to know and love. In addition, Key Visual Arts also announced a more precise release date for the game.

At this point, you’re probably thinking: “Wait, what did you just say?!?! Release date, when?!?!”

This is great news because this is the third major instance of Key showing that they’re serious about making this visual novel. Today, Gokurousama Translations officially announced their intentions to translate Cocoro@Function!

This novel is also from the creators of Kono Oozora ni, Tsubasa wo Hirogete (also known as If My Heart Had Wings), an acclaimed and award-winning Japanese Visual Novel claiming the title for best of its kind in Japan last year.
We are looking for more translators, editors, and a video editor.

About Narcissu 1 & 2′s Greenlight on Steam

Barely over a month ago, Sekaiproject initiated a Greenlight Campaign for Narcissu 1 & 2, which Tay wrote about.  A few days ago, the Greenlight blinked to life!   Since then, many enthusiastic supporters of this project have been presenting a plethora of questions; chiefly among them being about the translation itself, and projected milestone dates leading up to the game’s release on Steam.  Sekaiproject released an article outlining their future plans:

The (incomplete) list of things we need to do before the release, that I can think of right now in my excitement: (BTW. I did say this is totally incomplete and I totally made up this list right this moment right?)

  1. gp32 needs to finish his new translations of both Narci 1 and 2. These will be the ‘main’ scripts of the game. (Then of course the checking/editing period needed for that)
  2. I need to go back and refresh my old Narci 1+2 translations. Not a full rewrite, but touching up things that I feel are weak.
  3. We also have to work the Japanese back into the system and functioning properly (I don’t think there’s ever been a dual-language narci release. Technically it’s possible, but there’s certain fussy engine details that make it delicate.)
  4. Play testing. Lots and lots and lots of it. Because we want the thing to run smoothly when it hits steam
  5. Getting the engine to work across all the platforms we want to support..

Then there’s “nice to haves”…. that aren’t critical, might be dropped without notice if it’s slowing down the main release, or if unexpected surprises come up… or we add it on later on… if things work out.

  1. Even more languages? It’s an utter pain in the butt to integrate even just 2 languages in. Plus we’d need someone to vet the translation quality of the other versions…
  2. It’d be really nice to be able to release a soundtrack. There’s a bunch of hurdles that need to be cleared. Hopefully we can make something happen… but it ultimately depends on the rights holders in Japan to give the final OK.
  3. Steam cards/achievements? (who knows, we still have to look at the SDK and see what the heck is even possible… and if it makes any sense [debate for another day])

This is another huge step to making visual novels popular in the west, which has been Fuwanovel’s goal since it’s genesis.  If more amazing visual novels like Narcissu 1& 2 can get the Greenlight on Steam, then we’ll be looking at a heavy exposure of the west to these games, through a medium where there is no shortage of product.

Little Busters! Converted Edition for the PSP gets an English patch

Christmas is in a week and we have fitting anouncements for such occasion.

If you’re a fan of Key have always wished you could play your visual novels while you’re away from your computer, then stick around, because this article is for you!  patr0805 wrote on the Fuwanovel Forums that he is working on an english patch for the PSP version of Little Busters using the translated scripts from the PC version. He said that he had been working on the project for a couple months now by himself and does not intend to drop it. We wish we had known about it sooner but it’s still a great early Christmas announcement for Little Busters fans.

According to patr0805, the patch is fully compatible with physical copies of the game. Not only that, but since the Converted Edition actually needs installing when you play on a PSP, the patch will simply affect the installed files, not the UMD itself. This is great news for users who are afraid of having to hack into a game or simply don’t want to mess with one.

As you may know, the Converted Edition of Little Busters is the same in content as the Memorial Edition (ME) of the PC version which includes the Sasami, Kanade and Saya routes. These will be excluded from the first patch, effectively reverting the game back to the normal version of Little Busters much like the current Ecstasy (EX) patch. The reason being the still untranslated scripts for the ME version as patr0805 is not a translator himself. Fear not, there will be a full translation once the ME scripts are translated and a second patch will be made so you can enjoy the extra routes on your PSP as well.

Currently the entire common route plus Komari’s route have been patched in since the project’s genesis on October 31st. How long will it take until the full patch is out? We can only wait to find out, but since this is not a direct translation but rather an overwriting of the PSP scripts with the already translated scripts, and with so much progress in just a couple of months I would say early next year we might have the game translated and a patch ready to be installed, if things keeps going steadily as they are now.

For any Little Busters fan this is great news. And since there is such a big lack of PSP visual novels that are fan translated, Little Busters might just be the one that changes this mindset. I hope this information gets you more excited for Winter as it might be before this Winter is over that we get an english patch for the game.

Kotaku Reviews Kara no Shojo

Hey everybody, Tay here.  Kotaku’s published another VN review, this time focusing on Kara no Shojo.  Richard Eisenbeis, the author, leads with this statement which concisely articulates the points of the review itself:

Kara no Shojo (The Girl in the Shell) is simply one of the most graphic and disturbing visual novels I have ever played. It is also one of the most captivating.

Richard Eisenbeis had previously reviewed Saya no Uta (while his feelings were mixed on the game, he did recommend it with a Kotaku “Yes”).  Kara no Shojo similarly gets a “Yes”, but it comes with a caveat, pictured below:

Whether or not you like Kotaku, it’s certainly widely-read in the gaming community, and is slowly evangelizing our little-known genre.  Let’s just hope Richard picks a less-depressing/-disturbing game next time.

Angel Beats the Visual Novel massive updates

After the confirmation of Key’s next project: Angel Beats we now get huge updates and information about this long awaited novel. On December 27th Dengeki G released an article with the newest updates for the upcoming title as well as some sneak peaks into the in-game art. The official website for Angel Beats was also finally published and a lot of teasers and information was revealed for everyone’s enjoyment.

The novel will come out as a partial release titled Angel Beats – 1st Beat and it covers episodes 1 to 9 of the Anime, in terms of storyline, and will feature Iwasawa Masami’s, Matsushita’s and Yui’s routes, with Otonashi Yuzuru as the protagonist. The remaining routes which were not disclosed so far will be released in the next volumes and will cover the rest of the story. There will be 19 routes in total, including main heroines and side characters and the whole story will be told across a total of 7 volumes. No dates for the future volumes was released. There is also no information so far  about a full release covering every route so we can only hold on to hope for that.

The setting is the same as the Anime version which you might or might not be familiar with.  An afterlife universe where people who could not pass away peacefully end up in so they can experience what was lacking in their life and be able to be put to rest without any regrets. Otonashi Yuzuru  ends up in said universe and he will join the Afterlife Battlefront, a group of highschool students who rebel against God and what they call Angel. He will then meet with all the characters in the game. You will have several choices everyday and depending on the choices you make, each day will change, leading to a variety of scenarios within the common route itself and determining which character route you end up in. The story progresses like the Anime did meaning the first volume covers the first arcs of the Anime and the next volumes will cover the remaining arcs in a chronological order so there’s several branching points along what you can consider the common route, it’s not all crammed up into one single branching point at the end. The number of routes there will be per volume was not revealed. Will there be one true ending? That is all speculation for now.

The novel will feature scenarios where Otonashi gets romantically involved  with one of the main heroines as well as feature other extra routes with different characters and their stories, not focusing solely on the romance aspect.  You can deepen your bonds with each character and know every single bit about the afterlife highschool universe that was not fully told in the Anime adaptation.

One of the biggest shocks for a lot of people in these updates was perhaps a CG that was shown in the official website featuring one of the Girls Dead Monster band members Iwasawa in what seems to be a prelude to an erotic scene. However the rating on the website for the product still remains All Ages. Is there a possibility we will have a 18+ version of the game as well? The official annoucement was that it’s still undecided . Perhaps we will have two versions of the game for different demographics or maybe they will decide to stick with All Ages for a full vanilla love story. Only time will tell.  This certainly shocked a lot of fans who didn’t think any type or erotic content would exist in the title. However for others this is seen as a massive bonus.

These CGs that were revealed show that the illustration will be up to Key standards and that is only fitting for a game of this caliber. It certainily will look more refreshing and appealing than the Anime version did and I’m sure the emotions and feelings will be more present than ever.

You can expect a much deeper storyline in this version of Angel Beats for each character which was not as present in the Anime as well as a more detailed plot as this title will take a whole 7 volumes to be completed. A lot of high expectations from Key fans and Angel Beats fans is being put torwards the title and I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t. This Certainily is a massive after Christmas annoucement that Key decided to make. Perhaps a gift to all their fans. We can only patiently sit and check for more news as we anxiously await the release of this long awaited  Visual Novel.
